Getting started
Set up your first queue
A queue is one line of waiting customers. Your location needs at least one before anybody can join, and for most businesses one is the right number for a long time.
Creating a queue
Switch to the location you want, then go to Location settingsQueues.
Needs the permission locations.update_all_settings (update all locations settings). Owners and Admins have every permission by default.
Give it a name your customers will understand
The name is shown to visitors when a location has more than one queue, so “Collections” beats “Queue 2”. With a single queue most customers never see the name at all.
Save it
That is the whole form. Everything that shapes how the queue behaves — hours, capacity, what you ask people, what they get told — belongs to the location rather than the queue, so it applies consistently however many queues you run.
One queue or several?
Start with one. Add a second only when two lines genuinely move at different speeds or are served by different people — otherwise you have split your waiting customers into two lists that your team has to mentally recombine.
Splitting is usually right when:
- A pharmacy separates prescription drop-offs from collections, because one takes thirty seconds and the other takes ten minutes.
- A bank separates quick counter work from advisor appointments, because different staff serve each.
- A shop separates returns from sales, because the returns desk is a different desk.
And usually wrong when:
- You want to know what people are waiting for. That is what services are for, and they record it without fragmenting the line.
- You want different staff to handle different visits. That is what resources are for.
Wait estimates are per queue
An estimate is worked out from how that queue has actually been moving. Two queues means two independent estimates, which is the point when they really do move at different speeds — and misleading when they do not.
Renaming, reordering and archiving
Queues can be renamed at any time; the name is display text and nothing is keyed to it. Where a location has several, you can reorder them, and the order is what visitors see when they choose.
A queue you no longer use is archived rather than deleted, so the visits that went through it stay intact in your history and reports. Archived queues can be restored. More detail on the queues settings page.
